If you're planning a trip to Burgas, prepare for an experience unlike any other. Located on Bulgaria's idyllic Black Sea coast, this destination is full of surprises that has made our five-day adventure unforgettable. From my friend Benni's epic bachelor party to the magical wedding, this trip was an absolute blast. Don't miss the highlight reel I created as a unique wedding gift! You can watch it above. Can you see me in the video?
How to Get to Burgas
We had originally planned to drive the scenic route from Munich to Burgas - a three-day adventure full of picturesque roads. Nevertheless, we would have lost about a week in mere travel. This is why we opted to fly with Bulgaria Air. I didn’t know the in the beginning but can only share positive experiences about the trip. Yes, their planes are quite old and nostalgic, but the flight was on time and comfortable.
Top Activities in and around Burgas
While Burgas is synonymous with its enchanting Black Sea beaches, the area has so much more to offer. From sunbathing on the golden beaches to adrenaline-pumping kite surfing on the northern part of the beach, to sizzling nightlife. Caribe, a beachfront cocktail bar, became our go-to party spot. Here are some of my favorite activities:
Paintball and Shooting Adventure at Shooting Range Kapcheto
First impressions? A little sketchy, I won't lie.
The first impression of the Kapcheto Shooting Range was... interesting. This place is in the middle of nowhere and looks like a DIY operation. But don't let that fool you, the paintball game itself is great. There are lots of car wrecks, a broken bus, and all sorts of wild places to hide.
For 35 leva (around 18€) you get a gun, 100 paintballs, a helmet, and an overall. Need more ammo? It's another 7.50 leva for 50 more paintballs. But heads up: the "safety gear" is just a thin paper suit and a so-so helmet. We got out with just a few bruises, so it's all good, but you should know that it's kind of the bare minimum on the safety front.
If paintball's not your thing, they've also got a lane where you can shoot actual firearms. It'll cost you 15 leva an hour, plus a little extra for bullets, guns, and targets.
Good to know before you go.
The staff only speak Bulgarian. Seriously. We had a local buddy with us, and we still got short-changed on the paintballs. So, if you're planning to go, bring someone who speaks the language or you'll be navigating some tricky terrain.
Feel the Adrenaline at Acquapark Nessebar
The Aquapark Nessebar is a must if you're in Burgas. It's about 45 minutes away by taxi, or you can take public transportation, which takes about 1:30 hours. The ticket is 64 leva for a full day (a bit more than 30€) and they give you this bracelet that you can load with money. Super handy for buying snacks or whatever. Oh, and lockers cost 5 leva, but you get that back when you leave.
And: the slides here are next level! There are so many, you won't be able to try them all unless you plan on moving in. Seriously, you'll be running around all day and only be able to hit a few more than once. And let's not forget, they have some insane slides that are worth every penny and minute spent there. My absolute favorite was the Looping Rockets and Dragero. Try not to scream when you go!
Rejuvenate at Burgas Salt Pans
Just an hour's walk from downtown Burgas, you'll find this gem: the Burgas Salt Pans. They are right next to the shores of Lake Atanassov, and a hit with locals and tourists alike. The really cool thing about these salt lakes is that you can actually float in the pink water! It's like you're weightless. Trust me, your skin will thank you for it. It will feel baby-soft.
Pro tip: Don't skip the healing mud! I know it smells a little, thanks to some very scientific stuff like decaying microorganisms, but it's worth it. My girlfriend Andy and her mom skipped it, but I swear by its benefits. And: Admission to your personal spa day is only 5 leva, and it's cash only, so take some change with you.
Where to Stay in Burgas: Hotels for Every Budget
Cozy Comforts at Hotel Ruvan
Finding the right place to stay can be difficult, especially in a new country. We were lucky to find the Hotel Ruvan, a cozy 3-star hotel near the center of Burgas. The place was spotless and the staff couldn't have been nicer. They even make a decent breakfast! Plus, its location is perfect for exploring Burgas on foot - it's close to both downtown and the beach.
Luxury Living at the Grand Hotel and Spa Primoretz
For those who want more luxury, the Grand Hotel and Spa Primoretz is the perfect place to stay. This 5-star hotel offers everything from plush robes to spa treatments, and ocean views.
I hope my picks point you in the right direction for your stay!
Best Places to Eat and Drink in Burgas
Hidden Gem: 8 Mamas
In a city full of restaurants, 8 Mamas stands out. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, it serves delicious local fare. I tried the vegetarian sack - a sizzling plate of roasted vegetables, cheese, and sweet curry sauce. Sounds weird, but it's a must! Curious about the name "8 Mamas"? It's a cool story: The original name was “Mama’s Cooking”. But the owner was inspired by some chic "8" logos in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia and changed the name to what it is today. However, it’s true that there are only mama’s cooking for you. So expect great homemade food!
Beachy Vibes: Al Mare
If you're looking for killer food with an ocean view, Al Mare is the place to go. The pita bread with garlic and the famous Bulgarian yellow cheese was a showstopper. Trust me, it's as good as it sounds!
FAQs for Navigating Bulgaria's Culinary Landscape
Bulgarian food is fragrant and delicious. They are crazy about their yellow cheese, which I love as well! Before we went to Bulgaria, my dear friends Benni and Dani put together a list of typical Bulgarian dishes that they recommended we try. I thought you could benefit from their insider knowledge and recommendations, so I listed them below. Some of the culinary suggestions I tried, others I was not brave enough to try. But maybe you will?
Bulgarian Breakfast Must-Haves
— Banitsa: Flaky pastry with feta cheese, available in any local bakery. Great as a to-go snack too!
— Mekitsi: Fried bread, best served with powdered sugar or jam.
— Ayran: A refreshing yogurt-based drink with a pinch of salt.
— Boza: A fermented wheat drink and only for the brave! However, I was not brave enough! It smelled like nail polish remover 😱😱😱
Bulgarian Lunch Must-Haves
— Moussaka: A casserole of potatoes and minced meat.
— Pileshka Supa: Classic chicken soup.
— Tarator: A cold summer soup, kind of like tzatziki but more liquid. It’s yummy but not my favorite.
— Shopska Salad: A flavorful combo of veggies and Bulgarian Sirene cheese. Definitely a must-try!
— Shkembe Chorba: Made from beef belly, great for hangovers but stinky! So it’s perfect before a date if you want to scare her off 🤪
Must try for Bulgarian Dinner
— Satch: Sizzling meat and veggies on a hot stone. 8 Mamas serves great Vegetarian Satch!
— Gjuvetsche: Various dishes served in clay pots.
— Lyutenitsa: A spicy dip or spread made from tomatoes and peppers.
— Parlenka, Pitta: Types of bread often with toppings. Al Mare has an amazing Pitta bread!
Wrapping Up My Bulgarian Adventure: Sun, Sea, and Unforgettable Moments
Wow, Burgas was something special! Great food, killer beaches, and so many cool spots to check out. The highlights? Of course the wonderful wedding of my friends Benni and Dani. The thrilling rides at Aquapark Nessebar, floating in the unreal pink waters of the Burgas Salt Pans, and stuffing my face with some great food.
But the icing on the cake was definitely Benni and Dani's wedding - so much love and so much fun. It was the kind of celebration that could only happen in such a special place.
The downside? The time went by way too fast. There's so much more to see, like the charming towns of Nessebar and Sozopol, and the vibrant Sunny Beach. So you can be sure I'll be back to explore more of what Bulgaria has to offer. Cheers to the next adventure!
